Pacific Tower May Newsletter 2021

NEW SECURITY MEASURES

In light of the recent car break-ins in the neighborhood and right here, Pacific Tower has taken steps to secure your safety. Based on suggestions from Community Relations Officer Broaddus of our Northern Division SDPD:

1.    We have changed everyone’s entry keys to the front door, lobby, and exterior doors.

2.    We have issued new remote control key fobs for the lower garage gate

3.    We have added more lighting in the lower and upper garages

4.    We have added four more security cameras

5.    We have hired a security firm to patrol the premises over- night every night 7 nights a week. The guard will be wearing a blue uniform with the word SECURITY on the back.

6.    We are active members of Neighborhood Watch – Karyl Miller is Block Captain

SUMMER IS COMING!

Now that summer is almost here, it’s important to review the pool rules:

Covid Pool Rules limited the pool to 10 residents and NO GUESTS. However, since there is a month lag time between when this newsletter is written and when you receive it, that rule may have changed. Be sure to notice the most current dated signage posted on the pool gates for updated rules.

POOL RULES THAT DON’T CHANGE (short version) :

No food

No glass bottles

No diving

No loud music or horseplay

No propping open the pool gates

No nudity

                                             LAUNDRY ROOM BOOBOOS

On the back of every laundry room door is a sign stating Please do not prop these doors pen, by order of the Fire Department. And YET: Many doors are propped open using hangers and other make-shift devices. We realize that it can get hot in the laundry room, especially when the dryer is going, but we ask you to CLOSE the door to the Laundry Room when you are through with folding your laundry. Otherwise it’s a fire hazard. Thank you.

SPRING FEVER!

Yes, it finally happened. Spring has sprung. The sun is shining. The flowers are blooming. Daylight saving is here, so we sprang forward an hour. So 5 PM became 6 PM and it’s still sunny after returning from work! Yay!

For seniors, our endless year of Covid quarantine is finito. Most of us Oldies-But-Goodies in the building have gotten our super-duper vaccinations and are now free to get back out there and resume living our active lives, hugging grandchildren, dining out, roller skating and of course Twerk dancing. There are several new restaurants in the area to discover - all offering outdoor seating. However, the CDC reminds us to still wear our masks, practice social distancing and wash our hands, but we can probably stop worrying about the damn thing (or the future mystery virus) killing us (at least for now).

ALL NEW WORKOUT

Did you gain the Terrible 10 Pandemic pounds while you were vegging on your couch watching endless hours of Netflix? Who didn’t? But it’s not a problem: Join the club and by that I mean pop on down and test out our new and improved gym equipment in the gym/rec room. We finally sprung for a new treadmill! That old dog wasn’t going anywhere so we bid it adios!

And we didn’t stop there - we also bought a new Elliptical Trainer. If you have never tried one of these contraptions – you are in for a treat, albeit a sweaty one because you will be moving everything all at once.

A reminder: For those who cannot be separated from your phones, we offer free WiFi in the gym.

Until further notice, the common areas of the building like the gym still require masks.

LOWER GARAGE BLUES

People who park in the lower garage are now eligible to swap out their old remote entry clicker for a new and improved remote entry clicker. See our Building Manager Joseph.

Friendly reminder: Please do not store stuff in your parking place. Motorcycles are ok if there is space. But surfboards, packing boxes, baby paraphernalia, windows, plastic storage bins, oil drain cans etc. are NOT okay. Other people see your stuff and they assume it’s OK to store their stuff and the next thing you know; it’s a mess down there. Park your bike in the bike rack or if you have wall space behind your car, Building Manager Joseph will put up wall-mount bike rack for your bike. Thank you.

CARDBOARD, CARDBOARD EVERYWHERE

Dear Boardie:

Q. What do I do with the box my new 70” TV came in?

A. Please do NOT leave it in the laundry room – that’s for pizza boxes and things the janitorial staff can handle. Massive boxes with massive packing materials require contacting Building Manager Joseph. Call or text 619.339.3490

MAKING GOOD CENSUS

To: Owners and Renters.

The Lobby Office needs to be able to contact everyone in case of an emergency. If you haven’t given Joseph your cell number and your email, please do. During the pandemic, a number of people had their girlfriend/boyfriend move in or got engaged or even married. Congratulations. Could we have their info please?

Pacific Tower January 2021

Historical Treasure Found in Pacific Tower Storage Room!

Presenting the 1972 brochure for the soon-to-be built Pacific Tower condos (completed by 1974). “Spectacular Condominium Homes in San Diego’s Pacific Beach. The Pacific Tower is a 12-story steel reinforced poured concrete building constructed in conformance with the most modern engineering standards of strength and safety. The architect is Donald B. Schwenn, Architects Inc. of Phoenix Arizona.”

If you peek into our Building Manager Joseph’s office you will see two giant posters on the wall behind his desk that are actually details from inside this sales presentation.

Are you wondering what it cost to be an original PT buyer? The following sheet was also found along with the brochure:

Just for fun, Google or Zillow or Realtor.com your address and find out how much your unit has appreciated over the past 47 years! Wow! Yes, everyone wants to live here. Some people have even paid above the asking price, just to live in our amazing community. And what is the first thing people do when they buy? Remodel. This leads me to a recent letter:

Dear Boardie,

Q. The construction noise coming from somewhere in the building is driving me crazy.

A. I feel your pain, literally since Boardie can hear it too. We all hear it due to our wonderful concrete construction mentioned on the previous page.

Q. What can I do?

A. Not much. Owners have the right to do repairs and remodel from 8 AM to 5 PM Monday through Friday and 9 AM to 5 PM on Saturday.

Q. But what if I’m stuck inside, working from home because of Covid? Help!

A. Building Manager, Joseph Arellano can give you earplugs.

Q. That’s the BEST you can do?

A. You can try working in the Rec Room 210 which is further away from the construction.

There are nice tables and chairs, plenty of sunlight and , of course, WiFi.

August 2020 Newsletter

RUMORS THAT COVID - 19 WAS CONQUERED ARE FALSE!

Dear Boardie

    Q. PB is filled with people not wearing masks and partying like it’s 1999. So is the Covid scare         over?

    A. No! PB had a 120% spike in virus cases – the highest in the county. Time to go back in the            box!

    Q. What should I do?

    A. Wear your mask, wash your hands, practice safe distancing, ride the elevator alone, stay                 home if  you can and be careful all over again! It ain‘t over till it’s over!

 FROM THE CDC:

Watch for symptoms

People with COVID-19 have had a wide range of symptoms reported – ranging from mild symptoms to severe illness. Symptoms may appear 2-14 days after exposure to the virus. People with these symptoms may have COVID-19:

Fever or chills

Cough

Shortness of breath or difficulty breathing

Fatigue

Muscle or body aches

Headache

New loss of taste or smell

Sore throat

Congestion or runny nose

Nausea or vomiting

Diarrhea

When to Seek Emergency Medical Attention

Look for emergency warning signs* for COVID-19. If someone is showing any of these signs, seek emergency medical care immediately:

Trouble breathing

Persistent pain or pressure in the chest

New confusion

Inability to wake or stay awake

Bluish lips or face

*This list is not all possible symptoms. Please call your medical provider for any other symptoms that are severe or concerning to you.

Call 911 or call ahead to your local emergency facility: Notify the operator that you are seeking care for someone who has or may have COVID-19.

Find a testing site in CA https://covid19.ca.gov/

A/O 7.12.20: Because of the demand, it now averages 8 days for test results. Consider isolating yourself till the results come back – otherwise what’s the point?

 HAPPY ANNIVERSARY, JOSEPH!

July marks the 2-year anniversary of Joseph Arellano as our dedicated Building Manager. We think he’s doing a terrific job at what is not an easy job - fielding complaints and putting out fires (figuratively!) all day and sometimes on nights and weekends. When you see him say thanks! Remember, if you have any problem, no matter how small call or text him at 858. 339.3490.

ROOF NEWS

Dear Boardie,

    Q.  I thought the roof remodel would be started by now. What happened?

    A.  So much planning and so many factors have come together and there’s now a hold up on the        very first part of the roof job – the removal of the old roof. Stay tuned…

BOARD ELECTIONS

Dear Boardie,

    Q. What happened to the usual June Annual Party and Board Elections?

    A. Covid happened.

    Q. So what’s the plan?

    A. July 12, a notice came from PHOAC announcing the coming Board elections. A third-party         called  Ballot Box will be sending you a ballot. Elections will take place on Zoom, not in-                person.

    Q. Why should I vote?

    A.  The Board decides where your monthly $450 is going, so it’s an important choice.  We                    need at least 40 people to vote to qualify as a legit election.

BONUS: As an incentive to vote we will raffle off a free month’s HOA fee to one voter. Odds are very good since there are only 118 possible voters. What have you got to lose?

How to Be More Secure

As a precaution for Coronavirus transmission, our lobby door has been propped open during the day to minimize touching the handle. It gets closed around 5 (and if you come home at 5:30 and it’s still propped open – please move the sandbag and close the door).
Recently around 6 PM our Lobby security cameras caught a group of five young men letting themselves into the building using a pass code. They had towels and swim fins, obviously intent on taking a little dip in our swimming pool. Luckily they were foiled in their attempt because they had no key to the pool. But we don’t want any strangers wandering around the building.
So, it’s worth reminding people NEVER USE OR GIVE OUT the Mailman/FedEx’s secret 4 digit pass code (if you know it). The more people who have that code the more chance every Tom, Dick and Harry One-time Gig Worker can come back and just let themselves in any time they want. Not cool.
Your Pizza deliveryperson, furniture deliverymen or laborers should ONLY be punching in your separate passcode issued only to you. During Covid, we were hoping you would meet the deliverymen in the lobby so that fewer people pass through the building. However…
TO ENTER WITHOUT A KEY A VISITOR COULD:
1.    Dial the resident’s personal unique SECRET 4 digit access number. Example: #5555 (don’t forget to type in the # hashtag) and the door will open.
                                                OR
2.    Dial the resident’s 4-digit Unit Number to call the resident’s phone so they can buzz you in.
Examples:
Unit 215, Dial 0215 (we added the 0 to make it 4 digits)
Unit 1213, Dial 1213
(Note – not every phone is connected to the intercom.)

June Newsletter

Dear Boardie,
Q. All we hear about is Covid, Covid, Covid. Isn’t there any other news in the building?
A. There’s plenty of other building news but the pandemic will still be with us by the time you read this.

COVID PROGRESS REPORT. At the time of this writing, we know of no person in the building who has caught Covid. That’s very good news, but not time to let down our guard against this highly contagious and deadly disease. Wash your hands 20 seconds as soon as you come home. Wash your hands immediately after returning from the Laundry Room. Wear a mask.

BUILDING MANAGER – Our dedicated Building Manager Joseph Arellano is now back full time, and we appreciate his daily troubleshooting. BUT please practice Social Distancing and do not enter his office. Stand no closer than his doorway to chat with him. Call or text him at 619.339.3490. The virus is no excuse to ignore a problem in your unit like a leaky toilet or hearing a sound that seems wrong. Call Joseph!

LAUNDRY ROOM – Try to be alone. If someone is folding their laundry, come back later. Sure it seems unfriendly, but this is the new friendly.

POOL – The new Covid pool rules are working. No more than about ten swimmers can occupy the pool area, NO GUESTS. Our lounges will be washed down twice a week. Please remember to limit your sunning to 2 hours so others can enjoy the pool too.

ELEVATORS – This Covid rule needs to be taken more seriously. This is a time to NOT do the polite thing and invite strangers to crowd into the elevators with you. This is the time for Social Distancing. Try to ride the elevator alone or with your partner or take the stairs. Please don’t take offence if the elevator stops on your floor and the riders inside hold up their hands in the Stop Sign – choosing to ride alone. Forgive them. They are just being safe.

MASKS – Please for the sake of your health and the health of others, wear a mask. A mask will also create barrier so you don’t inadvertently touch your nose or mouth (which is how the virus gets in).

PIZZA DELIVERY – If possible, meet your delivery person in the lobby so that less strangers from outside are in our elevators and hallways.

BUDDY SYSTEM – We thank our volunteer Buddies who have been helping residents in various ways such as computer coaching over the phone, getting groceries for people, going to the post office, rolling up notices and putting them on 118 doors and posting notices on the laundry room bulletin boards. If you are sequestered and need a Buddy’s help, contact Buddy Coordinators Brandt Montgomery or Karyl Miller.

OTHER BOARD NEWS:

ANNUAL MEETING - Due to uncertainty about the virus we were not able to schedule our normal June Annual Meeting and Board Elections. Elections and Annual Meeting are postponed till possibly August or September.
There are also new State rules governing HOA Elections (having nothing to do with the virus) that must be adopted by the board this year. You will be getting a special mailing informing you about the elections and inviting you to nominate yourself. The annual meeting will probably take place on computer using Zoom and you will be given a notice on to how to log on.
Incentives to vote: As usual, we are offering one free month ($450) dues to one lucky voter. So vote!

UPDATE - ROOF! FINALLY! Our new roof project will begin around June 15 and will go on for about two months. First the old roof will have to be removed. A trash tunnel will be set up going all the way down to the street. It will be noisy and dirty and we are sorry for the inconvenience. Due to the virus precautions, roofers will be wearing masks in the common areas, and will have their own portable toilet
